The Semperoper located in the historical centre of Dresden is home to the Sächsische Staatsoper Dresden (Saxon State Opera) and the Semperoper Ballet. It is also the venue of the Staatskapelle Dresden, one of the oldest orchestras in history and a world-class formation. Buit by Gottfried Semper in 1841, the opera house burnt down in 1869 and was rebuilt, partly again by Semper, to be completed in 1878. Historically, the Semperoper is one of the most important opera houses in Germany boasting several premieres of major operas by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss. The Semperoper had to be rebuild again after the destructions of 1945. © 2014 Marc Haegeman.
