Each one of the 20 metre tall sunshades covers an area of more than 600 square metres and offers up to 800 pilgrims protection from the sun and heat, which can get up to 50° C in the summer in Saudi Arabia. The number of pilgrims increases every year and the 250 sunshades providing a shaded area of 156,000 m² now mean that the square can be used as an additional space for prayer. Heavily edited version of a picture I did show here before. To be honest, whenever I looked at the other versions, I thought something was missing.
