Bussaco Palace, Portugal by SandraFilipePhotography

The Bussaco Palace was constructed between 1888 and 1907 as a royal retreat by King Charles I of Portugal. Nowadays is working as a hotel, called Bussaco Palace Hotel, situated 25km north of Coimbra, Portugal. The building design was projected by Luigi Manini, an Italian architect brought to Portugal by Queen Maria Pia of Savoy, Charles’ mother, and daughter of Victor Emmanuel II of Italy. The palace evocates a Neo-Manueline gothic style, highlighting the 16th-century architectural style that characterized the peak of the Portuguese Age of Discovery.
