Looking over at Hastings Pier by annie7

Due to my husband being really poorly over the last three weeks I have been at home looking after him and not been able to get out with my camera. Thankfully he is starting to feel better now so I am looking forward to grabbing some more shots before winter really sets in. One of my favourite places from the past is Hastings Pier, lots of childhood memories. A bit of history on the pier: Hastings Pier was a pleasure pier in Hastings, East Sussex, England. Built in 1872 and enjoying its prime in the 1930s, though becoming a popular music venue in the 1960s, it received major storm damage in 1990, closed to the public between 1999 and 2002, then closed again from 2006. Efforts continued to save the pier, which was in need of much investment. The pier suffered extensive fire damage during the early hours of Tuesday 5 October 2010. Although the fire brigade arrived shortly after being alerted, the fire had quickly spread causing severe damage to the wooden buildings. Estimates indicate that 95% of the superstructure of the pier was subsequently destroyed in the fire. Two people were arrested on suspicion of arson but despite numerous bail hearings, no charges were made. The derelict pier, which was further damaged by storms in February, is undergoing a £14m restoration. Workmen will demolish the ballroom and use the barge as a platform from which to install new steel work and columns. Almost 40% of the restoration work has been completed. The Hastings Pier Trust hopes to reopen the pier next summer. via 500px http://j.mp/1rcP2rW
