Please press 'M' - Wishing you a wonderful sunday :-) City Hall of Vienna, Austria, architect Friedrich von Schmidt. Vienna is the capital of Austria, but it is also one of the nine federal provinces in its own right. For this reason, the council chamber in the Rathaus (City Hall) is the seat, not only of Vienna city administration, but also of the Landtag (Vienna provincial) Government. The Gothic revival building is regarded as the principal example of late Viennese strict historicism. The typical Gothic vertical design is repeatedly interrupted by horizontal Renaissance elements, for example the sills, which raises strong associations with French religious buildings. The Rathaus has one of the largest interiour courtyards in Europe. 331 steps lead up to the dominant central tower. The tower is 97.9 metres high, but the crowning 5.4 metres high figure of the knight (Rathausmann) holding the flagpole on its summit gives the tower a total hight of 103.3 metres. The figure, which weights 650 kilogramm, can stand up to any weather thanks to a spherical counterweight weighing 800 kilograms. Throughout the year there are many attractive events on the Rathausplatz (City Hall square) in front of the City Hall. These range from the summer film festival from July to September, and the "Christkindlmarkt" at Christmas. One special attraction is the Vienna "Ice Dream" (Eistraum), when the square becomes a skating rink. via 500px http://j.mp/1G52JdH
